Well, its finally here. summer is over and so is our summer project. i sit here and think about when i posted my first blog. how clueless i was of what there was to come. i was unpassionate, almost choosing a project that seemed somewhat ordinary because i had run out of ideas. summer was at its hottest and the last thing i had on my mind was what i was going to do for my APlanguage arts class that was months away. it seemed like a foreign idea. but other than not being 100% passionate about my goals for the project, i was unaware of the trials and errors. the highs and lows that i soon realized came with a 3 month long project. although Barbra kingsolver and my topics were somewhat similar, that is not what made our projects so similar to one another.
Kingsolver and i differ in the fact that i began my project uneducated and unpasionate about why i was doing it while she had spent her whole life realizing and dedicating herself to why she has set such a farf fetch goal for her and her family. she made it extremly clear to the reader why she felt her mission was so necessary, filling her work with facts and frightening realties in every single chapter. she shared stories about her own life experiences of becoming educated and passionate about growing ones own food and was ready to apply it to her own life. me on the other hand was going into a project with no former background, no motivation, and no reasoning behind what i was doing. other than the fact that i was runing out of time to decide what i wanted to do for my assingnment, i had no drive to making a goal to eat healthier. now i am sure Kingsolver had similar exeriences in her lifetime. it is a process that everyone goes through in their lifetime. the discovery that a goal will never be acheived if you are not truly 100% into what you want to acheive. that through educating yourself about the topic and understanding the pro's and con's of your mission one begins to becomes to gain passion on the project. without these basic necessities, any goal is near imposible to fully acheive. although to some, what kingsolver did would hav ebeen torture. but to kingsolver it was pleasurable. it made her feel satisfied with herself and i beleive after the dedline of her project was over, she never fully went back to how she did things beore she made the comitment to do it. in reality she probably stuck more to her new way of things than anything else. this is also another thing that i realized that came with the passion in any comitment. it takes drive and want in a project like these or you wil be miserable. there were times where i asked myself why i ever chose to make this my summer project. i didnt have any drive to make any progress. once i realized i needed to become educated, i realized why i wanted to do what i was doing and i believe i felt the same satisfaction with myself as Kingsolver did.
another way Kingsolver and my project was similar was the fact that we both had our highs and lows. our trials and errors. in her case, she found a weakness when it came time for a birthday in the family. she was pressured into getting foods that seemed almost neccesary for a brthday. she had this similar problem when she and her family decided to go on vacation. something that seemed impossible under their conditions. for me i found a weakness when all my friends were scarfing down pizza and other junk food that comes with summer. i also found a huge weakness when i went on vacations and camping which i bloged about. it was hard to stay focused on my goal when it seemed as though i had no choice of what food i ate. for kingsolver she was able to remember her motives and find ways to overcome her low points. for me on the other hand, i had no motive. therefore found myself saying "oh just this one time' or "im on vacation its okay". nevertheless, ever project has the weak and strong points no matter who you may be.
its clear to see the similarities between mine and Kingsolvers projects. although hers was ona much larger scale than mine, we both fced the same challenges and needed passion to acheive our goals. for me i learned alot more about goals and acheiving them, where she had clearly already learned these things in an earlier point in her life. although my projects deadline is now over, i, just like Kingsolver beleive i will stick to my new found ways instead of going back to how i had been before.
